Busking: Art and Offering

A bit of a poem I wrote about busking.

The Busker

What shall he do in the city
With the people he has just met
While he twirls the fire
And spins the line that pulls them in

Is it the meeting
Or the knowing that he seeks

The people come and look
What can be done
When one puts their mind to it
But most dont

"i could do that" some think to themselves
"i could think i could do that", from still others
None can
None will

Doing the thing
Each time making it seem
Like it is the first
And that this time
it might not work

The whole time talking
And telling
How those who agree to stay
Are special

At the end they pay
Some give what they can
Some give more
Some walk away

The trick he says
Is that by the time the hat is passed

They have paid already

They have given a smile
A laugh
A raised eyebrow

That payment holds
As much value
As the depth
Of the hat.

2012 Variety Show

The Yahoos had their 11th anniversary at the YHS variety show last night. Lots of fun! At the last minute they added Senior Grady McDavitt, an irish dancer. A nice touch if we do say so ourselves.

Ryan's Songs

Ryan, our youngest band member is off at art school. During his free time he has been busking regularly on Newbury Street in Boston. During his other freetime he has been writing and recording some new songs. Check him out on bandcamp.com And has remade a Yahoo favorite in Woody Guthrie style Also, recently learned harmonica and put together a medley.

Yorktown Yahoos Play for 50,000 Yahoos at Marine Corps Marathon

Yahoos Play For 50,000!

The Yorktown Yahoos were recently selected to be one of the musical groups to perform along the course at the 2012 Marine Corps Marathon.  They played for 50,000 runners and spectators.  The majority of their audience was transient...  The People's Marathon, as it is called, starts and ends in Arlington.  The boys roused themselves up early and were stationed at their post at mile 4 under the bridge at spout run at 7:30 am.  They were surprised to see the first runners sprint past before 8:15 less than 15 minutes after the start of the race.  The runners seemed to enjoy being sent on their way with a little tune and of course the Yahoos had fun as always.

In the mean time we will be performing at the Kettler Ice Arena on June 5th at the Friends of The Planetarium event to celebrate SunEarth Day and the transit of Venus. Gulf Branch Nature Center

A few years ago, Arlington County ran into some budget trouble. Among the cuts they decided to make was closing the Gulf Branch Nature Center. An outdoors educational facility that serves all of the citizens of Arlington, Virginia. Through the efforts of the citizens, the county board backed off of the proposal and has continued to operate the center(albeit reduced hours).

The Yorktown Yahoos were among the groups who volunteered to help out in raising awareness of the importance of the facility and to pressure the board into continued funding.

Here we are outside of Walker Cabin which is located on the property of the Nature Center.

Yorktown Yahoos Arlington Day Parade

Arlington used to have a parade on Arlington Day. It was eliminated during a tough budget year. We hope it comes back again soon. It was a very popular community event. Here is a link to a photo of us on our float. Here are two different years that we participated.
